Wastewater treatment
Shaftless screw conveyors for a wastewater treatment plant
A shaftless screw conveying system for sludge and screenings at a treatment plant — built to resist an aggressive environment, with flights sized for sticky material.
Contextul
At a treatment plant, the material to be conveyed is the hardest case for a conveyor: sludge is sticky, screenings contain textile fibres and foreign objects, and the environment is chemically aggressive. An ordinary screw with a centre shaft clogs — fibrous material wraps around the shaft until the machine jams, and the intermediate bearings that support the shaft on long runs are additional blocking points.

What problem it solved
The absence of a centre shaft removes the main cause of blockage when conveying sludge: there is nothing for fibrous material to wrap around, and no intermediate bearings to clog.
The flights were sized on the real behaviour of sticky material, not on a theoretical rate for free-flowing material — with sludge, the difference between those two calculations is the difference between a machine that runs and one that stops every week.
